Titanic Survivor

I am currently working with a client in Bristol England. Before I started my search, my client made a special effort to sit down with his elderly parents to retrieve as much information on their relatives as possible.

This is truly a lesson for all of us. Our parents and grandparents are our link to the past. Once they are gone, stories, dates, names, often go with them.

In this case all I needed was my client’s father’s name and date of birth. As I work through a search to find potential ancestors, I always like to corroborate information with additional sources. It was during my double checking on the names of all my client’s grandfather’s siblings that I came across the amazing story of Thomas Albert Street.

One of twelve siblings, Thomas is the granduncle of my client…and a Titanic survivor.

Thomas signed-on to be a fireman on the Titanic on 6 April,1912. He received monthly wages of £6 per month.

On the night of the sinking, he was off duty.

Thomas was one of the many who jumped into the icy waters and waited for a lifeboat to take them aboard. He was eventually rescued with many other fortunate survivors by the RMS Carpathia.

This was not the last time Thomas survived a sinking ship! Read the details of his life on the Encyclopedia Titanica.
