Sometimes while researching a family history you find stories that truly reflect the times your ancestors lived in. It always reminds me of the opening line of a Tale of Two Cities; “It was the best of times it was the worst of times.”
This disturbing newspaper clipping is from the Indiana State Sentinel, June 8, 1887.
The “Squire McDonald” it mentions is third Great Grandfather of my client.
I can’t help but feel sorry for the poor woman in question and the fate of her baby. She is rudely called “half witted” in the article. What happened to Sarah Clingler? Was she jailed? Sent to some institution? I haven’t been able to find out. Click on the image of the original newspaper below for all the gory details.
The stories of our ancestors, the people they meet and the times they lived in, give us a window into the past. I think it helps us understand ourselves a little better.
